The federal income tax is a pay-as-you-go tax. You must pay the tax as you earn or receive income during the year. There are two ways to pay as you go. If you are an employee, your employer probably withholds income tax from your pay. In addition, tax may be withheld from certain other income, such as pensions, bonuses, commissions, and gambling winnings. The amount withheld is paid to the IRS in your name.
Estimated tax. People who are in business for themselves generally will have to pay their tax this way. You may have to pay estimated tax if you receive income such as dividends, interest, capital gains, rents, and royalties. Estimated tax is used to pay not only income tax, but other taxes such as self-employment tax and alternative minimum tax. This publication explains both of these methods.
It also explains how to take credit on your return for the tax that was withheld and for your estimated tax payments.

If a change in personal circumstances reduces the withholding allowances you are entitled to claim, you are required to give your employer a new Form W-4 by 10 days after the change occurs reducing your withholding allowances.
Otherwise, if you want to change your withholding allowances for any other reason, you can generally do that whenever you wish. See Table for examples of personal and financial changes you should consider. If you change the number of your withholding allowances, you can request that your employer withhold using the Cumulative Wage Method , later.
After you have given your employer a Form W-4, you can check to see whether the amount of tax withheld from your pay is too much or too little. If too much or too little tax is being withheld, you should give your employer a new Form W-4 to change your withholding.
